Can you dye hair extensions?

Kann man Extensions färben?

Hair colour is a relevant topic for many people. It can completely transform your appearance and create a completely new look. Hair colour naturally plays a key role, especially for hair extension wearers, as they strive for a natural look with soft, seamless transitions. To achieve this, it's essential that the colour of the hair extensions is as identical as possible to that of your own hair. While we at Global Extend are constantly adapting our product range and optimising the colour representation on our website, it may still happen that not everyone finds a suitable colour for their new hair extensions right away.

Even if you want to change up your look, the question naturally arises as to whether you can change the colour of your existing extensions - for example, if you want to switch from brunette to blonde. Therefore, it's perfectly understandable to ask yourself: Can I dye my extensions? What about toning, or even bleaching them? If you've ever wondered this, or if you're considering changing the colour of your human extensions, you should definitely read on.

The most important tips for radiant colours with extensions

First of all: if you have the option to avoid colouring the extensions, that would of course be the best option. Any type of chemical aftercare, be it dyeing, bleaching, or traditional hair colour, can have a greater or lesser impact on the quality of the hair extensions. Our human hair extensions are chemically treated during production. It's not good for hair—whether extensions or your own hair—to be coloured multiple times. To ensure you enjoy your new hair for as long as possible, we recommend using as little chemical aftercare as possible, as this can potentially impair the hair structure and the bonding points. However, our extensions are made of 100% high-quality Remy human hair, which is a prerequisite for colour changes. If you follow our tips and advice, you can minimise the risk of hair damage.

Darker, not lighter:

We generally advise against bleaching. It's almost impossible to completely avoid hair damage. Furthermore, it's sometimes unpredictable how the colour will develop. Bleaching can reveal unwanted tones or undertones that can't be completely controlled even with a toning agent (especially since toners naturally wash out over time). But what about dyes that can lighten hair, so-called high-lift colours? These should also be avoided when it comes to hair extensions. Since human hair extensions are coloured hair, the colour may change little or not at all if you try to lighten it with colour. Lightening coloured hair usually requires bleaching, which we do not recommend. Dyes can also damage the hair structure. Therefore, it's better to change the extensions to a darker shade rather than lightening.

Wash extensions beforehand and test the colour:

Our extensions are initially coated with a protective layer for storage and shipping purposes. Therefore, it's best to wash the extensions before colouring or toning to create the best possible base for the colouring process. It's also a good idea to colour a small test strand of the extensions first to get an idea of the final result.

Protect the connection points:

Dye the extensions before installing them (not after they've already been attached to your natural hair). This makes it easier to prevent colour from getting onto the connection points. Especially with keratin bonds, Genius Wefts, or tape-ins, contact with chemical products like colourants or toners can be fatal. But with all other types of extensions, the connection point should also be avoided when dyeing.

The right hair care:

Extensions require proper care and careful handling . After colouring or toning, it's even more important to treat them with moisturising products. A suitable conditioner and hair oil are essential. When choosing a shampoo, make sure it's not too harsh and doesn't dry out the hair further. We recommend our complete care set to ensure you're well-equipped.

Can you dye or bleach your roots whilst wearing extensions?

It can be difficult if you have completely bleached hair and are wearing hair extensions such as keratin bonds. Many blondes who naturally have dark hair have their roots bleached once a month. Things get more complicated if you wear keratin bonds, which are usually worn for several months at a time. As we have already established, neither bleach nor hair dye should get onto the bond areas. You can try to apply it in such a way that nothing gets on the bonds, but this is almost impossible to avoid. It is best to always have your roots touched up shortly before putting in the hair extensions so that you can enjoy a great look for as long as possible. It is a little easier with balayage or highlighted hair. Here it is not so dramatic if the roots grow out a little longer, as there is no harsh transition.

Do I also have to be careful when toning?

Tints or toning products can be gentler alternatives to permanent hair dyes. However, you should still follow all the tips in this blog post. There are semi permanent dyes that don't require mixing with a developer, meaning no chemical process is initiated. These products often even contain conditioning ingredients. If you have access to these, the risk of hair damage is generally quite low. However, any type of colour treatment unfortunately still carries a risk.

Dyeing hair extensions is always done at your own risk. Unfortunately, our 3-month extension warranty expires once the extensions have been dyed, whether with a, colour, dye or toner. With proper handling and proper hair care afterward, the risk of hair damage can be minimised, allowing you to enjoy your new hair colour.

Find the perfect colour match right from the start

We will be happy to help you choose the right extensions so you don't have to worry about colouring them.

Simply contact us on WhatsApp or via email and include one or two photos of your hair. Ideally, photos taken in natural light without a filter are best, where your hair is fully visible, right down to the tips.

Alternatively, you can order our colour ring to find your shade using the colour samples.

If you receive extensions that don't match your hair colour, please don't put them into your hair right away. Hold the extensions next to your natural hair in front of a mirror to compare the shades. If they don't match, you are welcome to return the unused extensions within the return period. Don't hesitate to contact us if you need assistance. You can also include a strand of hair in the return package so we can choose the perfect colour for you. We can almost always find the perfect colour for you this way, so you don't have to worry about toning or dyeing!
